Hawks to use 2 quarterback system versus Indiana

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -  The Iowa Hawkeyes used both C.J. Beathard and Jake Rudock in a win at Pitt out of necessity. On Saturday versus Indiana, they'll be doing it because they want to.

Rudock's started 17 of Iowa's last 18 games throwing 23 touchdown strikes in that time. This weekend, however, he'll be sharing time under center, and it's not a situation that he's particularly happy with.

"Obviously I want to be there every single snap,”said the junior quarterback, “That's my reaction. Yeah, that's pretty much it."

The 2 quarterback system is something new to Hawkeyes, but coach Kirk Ferentz believes Beathard earned his playing time after leading a come from behind win at Pitt, while overcoming a slow start at Purdue to help the Hawks to their first Big 10 win.

Although both will play, they expect the game plan to remain the same.

"Obviously we have some different strengths,” said Beathard, “but we have a game plan. It's not a game plan specifically for me. It's the game plan to win the game. That's what we both have to know."

As for that actual plan, Ferentz says it's still being determined. The Hawks are heading in to uncharted waters, and will find out Saturday whether or not this system will work

"We don't know if it will,” said Ferentz, “We haven't gone down that road, so we're about to find out."
