New Loras College poll has Braley and Ernst tied

DUBUQUE (KWWL) - With four weeks left until election day, a new Loras College poll shows the race to replace retiring U.S. Senator Tom Harkin is a dead heat.

The poll, which was conducted from October 1 through October 3, shows 42.1 percent would vote for Bruce Braley and 42.4 percent would vote for Joni Ernst.

Of the remaining 15.5 percent, 11.8 percent indicated they are undecided and 3.7 percent say they would vote for other candidates.

The last Loras College poll, done in September, showed Braley with a slight advantage over Ernst.

These new results from a survey conducted October 1-3 indicate a rise in support for Ernst since the Loras College Poll taken at the beginning of September. That poll showed Braley with the advantage.

"Our latest results indicate that State Senator Ernst has recaptured some of the momentum she possessed at the beginning of this important race for control of the U.S. Senate," Christopher Budzisz, associate professor of politics and director of the Loras College Poll, said in a written statement.

When it came to respondents not registered as Democrat or Republican, which was 21.5 percent of the random sample, 34.1 percent said they would vote for Braley, while 42.6 percent said they would vote for Ernst.

The Loras College Poll surveyed 600 likely 2014 general election voters and has a 4 percent margin of error.
