High court begins new term with case on police actions

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. Supreme Court begins a new term today, and its first case tests whether a traffic stop can be justified when the officer mistakenly doesn't follow the law.

A man's car was searched and cocaine was discovered after a police officer stopped him for a brake light that wasn't working.

The man was later convicted of drug trafficking. But North Carolina law states that only one brake light has to work.
