IRS scam targeting Eastern Iowans

Posted: Updated:

A number of Eastern Iowans are reporting a scam from people posing as tax agents looking to make you pay. They call you on the phone saying they're from the IRS of Internal Revenue Service and you owe money when you really don't.

Chad Riechmann of Waterloo received one of those messages Thursday afternoon.

In an automated phone message the person said this: "This call is officially a final notice from IRS, Internal Revenue Services. This reason for this call is to inform you that IRS is filing a lawsuit against you,"

Getting that message was quite a surprise for the small business owner.

"We pay our taxes every month. You know, we're an incorporated company and when I get home and have a message like that I was shocked. It kept me up at night really worried about it," said Riechmann.

Riechmann decided to call the number back.

"It said the number was from Washington D.C. and it was the IRS and to leave your name and number and your information and I just hung up," said Riechmann.

Local law enforcement says the phone calls have been on the rise lately. But they are warning people, saying the IRS will never call and ask for personal information on the phone.

IRS officials says they do not use unsolicited email, text messages, or any social media to discuss your personal tax issue. They say if you owe taxes or think you might owe, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.
