Giant pumpkins set new records in Anamosa

Posted: Updated:

As part of the city's Pumpkinfest celebration, Anamosa hosted it's 26th annual Ryan Norlin Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off Saturday afternoon.

The weigh-off brought in 23,544 total pounds of Atlantic Giant Pumpkins, or just over 10 tons.

There were 27 giant pumpkins brought to be weighed, coming from all across Iowa as well as 6 states.

Pumpkin growers come for some friendly competition, a cash prize and to set some new records.

The previous record was set in 2007 by Don Young of Des Moines with a 1662 pound pumpkin, but this year, Scott Steil of Richmond, Minn. broke that record with his 1,665.5 pound pumpkin.

"These guys are top notch guys. It's the competition, it's getting on the float, it's just awesome seeing a pumpkin go from the size of a walnut to a 16-foot-circumference," pumpkin grower Steve Krug said.

The giant pumpkin weigh-off was followed by the Pumpkinfest parade.

Pumpkinfest is a two-day event that is held on the first Saturday of October every year.
