Techs busy with Fall furnace checks

Posted: Updated:

Leaves are beginning to litter the ground, and cold rain is forming puddles – autumn is here. For many, that means it's time to check the furnace before it clicks on for the first time.

“Fall is a good time to get them cleaned up, checked out,” said Aaron Winberg, a service technician for Mike Fereday Heating and Air. “Make sure everything is running right.”

He said this time of year keeps him busy, servicing about 10 homes a day. On these calls, he checks and cleans sensors in the furnace, clears hoses and examines air filters.

“You want to look for discoloration,” he said, holding a filter. “You want to see light through it typically. For a one inch filter, you want to change it every thirty days.”

Depending on what company you call, a furnace check could run you $50-100. Winberg said it's better to schedule early, to prevent a breakdown in the middle of a cold winter night.

“It's a little more expensive having someone come out after-hours,” he said. “Plus, the fact of waking up uncomfortable.”
