Rotary Club holds special forum for Oelwein mayoral candidates

OELWEIN (KWWL) -

The people of Oelwein will have a chance to vote for their next mayor on October 7th.

The former mayor Jason Manus resigned in August following sexual abuse charges of two young girls.

The city council then appointed councilwoman Peggy Sherrets as acting mayor.

Some community members were upset with the appointment and petitioned for a special election.

A forum preceding the special election was held at the Oelwein Middle School tonight, hosted by the town's Rotary Club. The forum gave voters a chance to hear the four mayoral candidates stance on the town's most pressing issues.

Candidates answered pre selected questions from both club and audience members. The questions involved issues of how each candidate would help move the town forward.

Carol Tousley, a resident who attended the forum, said she's excited to move on from the Manus scandal.

"We're such a close knit community anyway, so we're positive. Things happen, but we're positive.

The election will be held on October 7th at the Oelwein Community Plaza.
