Cedar Rapids man pleads guilty to gun charge

A Cedar Rapids man has pleaded guilty to firing a shotgun into an apartment over his residence.

Fifty-one-year-old Clifford Smith was convicted in federal court of being a felon and unlawful drug user in possession of a firearm.

Smith was living in a downstairs apartment on Wilson Avenue in Cedar Rapids. At some point in the early morning hours of July 4, 2013 Smith fired a shotgun in his apartment. The blast went through the floor of the apartment above Smith's apartment. The owner of that apartment reported it to Cedar Rapids Police.

Smith faces a possible maximum sentence of ten years in prison, a $250,000 fine, $100 in special assessments, and three years of supervised release following any imprisonment.
