Eastern Iowa couple tips big after terrible service; photo goes viral

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - An eastern Iowa couple decided to leave a big tip after they say their service was terrible... and their story has gone viral.

Makenzie and Steven Schultz were dining at a Cedar Rapids restaurant Saturday and say they experienced bad service.

"So I don't think we were waited on for about 20 minutes, no water or anything. I was like so thirsty I kept saying I need some water. So finally we got some water from the manager and then it appeared that a server finally came and put an apron on and you could tell already he was flustered looking at all the tables that were, there were seated," said Makenzie Schultz.

The Schultz didn't blame the server. They say he did the best he could working with a packed house. Instead of complaining to the manager, they decided to leave the server a $100 tip and a note saying, "We've both been in your shoes. Paying it forward."

"I thought, 'Why don't we spin this and say look it we had terrible service and we could have sat here and said the restaurants name and how terrible it was but that's not the point. The point was he's trying, the food was great and why not make somebody smile.' I'm sure when he opened that up it made him smile," said Makenzie.

Makenzie took to Facebook talking about the experience, and posted a photo of their bill and tip.  Her post now has more than 1.3 million Facebook likes and more than 150,000 shares.

"A million is crazy to me. I have no idea how that has happened, but what I think what it's made me realize is just how people can truly relate to the post," said Makenzie.
