Police: Man who robbed, kidnapped cashier still on the run

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - Police are looking for a man who robbed a convenience store, kidnapped the clerk, and stole her car.

Police say the man walked into the Gasby's Conoco gas station on S. Gilbert Street just before 6:30 Sunday morning with a gun and demanded cash.

"Kind of freaks me out, but doesn't really surprise me," said Tracy Torp lives near the store.  "She was kidnapped, that's crazy, I'm a cashier."

Police say the 5'8, 200 pound man kidnapped the employee and forced her into her own car and drove off.

Blocks away the cashier somehow fought off the man and she was eventually pushed out of her moving car.

She did have minor injuries, but now home still reeling from the attack.

Police say the robber left the scene in the cashier's blue 1999 Ford Explorer with Iowa license plates 860-WJY.

"When that situation approaches, the best thing you can do is just hand over whatever they want," said Torp.

KWWL spoke with Gasby's general manager, he says they're already in talks of figuring out what to do to provide more safety for cashiers by possibly closing early or staffing more than one cashier during certain hours.

The general manager says they've been robbed before during the overnight hours, but never has a cashier gone with the robber and never have they been robbed in the morning.

As of Sunday evening, police have not yet caught the man or found the car.

The suspect is described as a black male, 5'8, 200 pounds wearing a black hoodie that was cut off above his pants, running pants with a stripe down the side, a white baseball cap and white athletic shoes.

If you see the car or the man you're urged to call Iowa City police (319) 356-5275.
