Braley and Ernst face off in first Senate debate

Posted: Updated:
INDIANOLA, Iowa (AP) -- Democrat Bruce Braley and Republican Joni Ernst have largely campaigned using scripted television ads and carefully controlled public events in the dead-heat Iowa Senate race.
But their first televised debate on Sunday night will put them in a new setting, answering questions on a range of topics before voters--and the stakes are high.
Ernst and Braley will meet at Simpson College in Indianola at 5 p.m.
Iowa is one of the year's most competitive Senate races. The seat is open because Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin is retiring. Republicans need six seats to win the Senate majority.
Braley is a four-term congressman from Waterloo. Ernst is a state senator and officer in the Iowa National Guard from Red Oak.
The debate is sponsored by The Des Moines Register and KCCI-TV.
