Customer data breach hits Iowa Jimmy Johns

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

A Cedar Falls Jimmy Johns is among the hundreds of stores that may have suffered a data breach.

The company said it appears customer credit and debit card data was stolen after someone stole a vendor's log-in credentials. They believe the breach occurred between June 16 and Sept. 5, 2014.

"Jimmy John's immediately hired third party forensic experts to assist with its investigation," a company representative wrote. "The security compromise has been contained, and customers can use their credit and debit cards securely at Jimmy John's stores."

At the Cedar Falls location on College St., they believe customer info is at risk if you shopped there between July 7 and Sept 5.

Approximately 216 stores are believed to be affected. Apart from the Cedar Falls location, 3 more Iowa stores are believed to be involved in Des Moines, Ankeny and Ames.

"We apologize for any inconvenience this incident may have on our customers. Jimmy John's values the privacy and security of its customers' information, and is offering identity protection services to impacted customers, although Jimmy John's does not collect its customers' Social Security numbers."

Company reps said they plan to install encrypted swipe machines and implement new polices and system enhancements to prevent future breaches.
