Elementary kids practice math in the aisles of grocery stores

QUINCY, Ill. (WGEM) - The aisles of Quincy's Hy-Vee on Broadway were turned into a classroom Tuesday night for the annual Family Fun Math Night event.

Over 50 elementary students from Ellington Elementary and St. Dominic's School participated in a grocery shopping scavenger hunt where kids practiced adding, subtracting and multiplying prices on grocery store items.

Ellington Principal Anne Cashman says it's a good way for parents to help kids apply math skill in every day life.

"They can do things like weigh apples, and figure out how many calories are in a certain food," Cashman said. "All different kinds of math use and they can see how it applies to real life."

The event put on by the Regional Office of Education continues until the end of this week.

Future Family Fun Math Nights:
-Dewey, September 24,  County Market 24th Street
-Blessed Sacrament and St. Francis, September 25,  Hy-Vee Harrison
-Washington School, September 25, Save-A-Lot 12th and Locust
