Hawkeye QB situation remains uncertain

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -  The decision is still unclear.

Hawkeye quarterback Jake Rudock has started 17 consecutive games. After suffering a minor hip injury at Pitt, however, Rudock is listed as day to day, putting that streak in jeopardy.

That makes C.J. Beathard the #1 quarterback, for now. Hawkeye coach Kirk Ferentz, however, isn't ruling out starting Rudock depending on how he progresses through the week.

We'll play it by ear,” said Ferentz, “The good news at least is we're not going way in to the bullpen to come up with something.”

Rudock was forced from the game at PittPittt before half with a 10 point deficit. That's when Beathard seemed to breath new life in to the Hawkeye offense. The Hawkeye sophomore led 3 consecutive scoring drives, and helped rally the Hawks to a 24-20 victory.

Beathard also earned the confidence of his teammates, and they say it doesn't really matter who starts.

All 10 other guys on offense have all the trust in the world with CJ or Jake in the game,” said offensive tackle Andrew Donnal.

Before I'd even gone in, they said they had my back,” said Beathard, “They were out there with me. I trust in them as much as they trust in me. We're a team.”

It's clear the majority of Hawk fans would like to see the sophomore under center. That opinion, however, is unlikely to factor in to Kirk Ferentz' decision.

"I feel good about both guys, said Ferentz, adding, “Most of those axioms are true. Everyone loves the number 2 guy. I do to. I'm glad he's on our team."
