A county assessor who was shot at by a gunman earlier this month has resigned.

Jackson County Assessor Deb Lane submitted her resignation letter Friday, the Telegraph-Herald reported. She will step down from her position effective Jan. 2, but will use vacation and accumulated comp time until then, according to the letter.

Lane was in a county supervisors meeting at the courthouse on Sept. 9 when Francis Glaser fired a handgun at her following a heated discussion about his property taxes.

The bullet missed and Glaser was tackled by a supervisor and others. A second shot hit Glaser and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lane did not return to work the rest of that week. Her resignation letter does not reference the shooting.

Lane has been county assessor for more than seven years. She worked in the assessor's office for 21 years.
