Manslaughter charges dropped against Charles City woman
CHARLES CITY (AP) -
Charges against a Charles City woman have been dropped in the crash death of a motorcyclist near Nora Springs in northern Iowa.
Stephanie Mercer, 23, was scheduled for trial on Nov. 20 on two counts of involuntary manslaughter -- one felony and one misdemeanor -- in Floyd County District Court.
Last week, a judge granted a prosecutor's motion to dismiss the charges. The motion said Mercer had agreed to plead guilty to another charge yet to be determined.
On May 21, David Crowe, 66, was riding his motorcycle east on U.S. Highway 18 when he slowed to turn right, according to an accident report. Mercer's sport utility vehicle then hit Crowe from behind, throwing him from the bike, the report said.
The motion to dismiss said there was no evidence that Mercer was traveling at an excessive rate of speed for the circumstances, had consumed alcohol or drugs, was using her cell phone, driving erratically or engaging in highly dangerous behavior.
