Charles City to break ground on new middle school

Posted: Updated:
CHARLES CITY (KWWL) - Charles City Schools will hold a groundbreaking on Friday for Phase I of a new middle school, located at the current high school site.

The plan has been in developing over the last seven years, and has undergone substantial changes in the last 11 months with extensive community input, according to officials.

This new building will be home to students in 5th through 8th grades.

The cost for phase I is $17.6 million and will be paid for by $10 million in general obligation bonds borrowed in 2013, $4.2 million in a physical plant and equipment levy (PPEL) and $3.6 million in a local option sales tax.

The building will feature separate entrances for middle school and high school students. The building will also be built with student and teacher security as a high priority.

Construction is set to begin in spring of 2015 with a tentative move-in date of August 2016.
