UNI brings back old tradition

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) - The parade is coming back to UNI and this time with a little twist.

Some wonder if adding more activities will illicit more criminal activity, but the students and staff I spoke with says it will do just the opposite.

UNI  junior Mark Jolcover says [public safety officers] as a whole do a really good job in terms of controlling the environment. The atmosphere [here] is all towards bringing up the school instead of bringing up outside sources such as alcohol.

Property damage, out of control crowds and over consumption of alcohol has tarnished the university's past.

But this year the university is trying something different, and bringing back the parade to the roster of homecoming events.

Instead of floats, students are decorating golf carts to be showcased during the parade.

University president Bill Ruud says bringing back the parade shows students how to celebrate responsibly, and using smaller vehicles will promote a safe environment for food, friends, family and fun.

Alumni Association Assistant Director Connie Hansen agrees, "I think it'll keep students busy. The student tailgate will give them an opportunity to celebrate in a family friendly environment."
