Iowa school sued over student's football injury

MASON CITY (AP) -

The mother of a Clear Lake student has sued the Clear Lake Community School District, saying it was negligent in handling her son's football injury.

Online court records say the lawsuit by Roxanne Hasfjord was filed on Tuesday in Cerro Gordo County District Court on behalf of her son, Austin.

Hasfjord is seeking unspecified damages for past and future medical expenses, pain, suffering and partial disability, the Mason City Globe Gazette said.

Clear Lake Superintendent Anita Micich declined to comment about the lawsuit.

Court documents say the boy suffered a serious head injury on Sept. 18, 2012, while participating in a school-sponsored football game. The documents say his injury was worsened during subsequent practices and games during the rest of the 2012 season.

The district was negligent, the lawsuit says, because it didn't investigate his injury, didn't monitor it and didn't limit his subsequent participation in games and practices.
