Dubuque bar changes name to fix reputation

Posted: Updated:

Owners of a Dubuque bar are fed up with the bar's bad reputation and going public with a new name. Players Club owner, Dave Lorenz, said his bar has been battling a rough reputation the past couple of years and it's time for a change.

"I thought the first thing we have to do is change the name if we're going to change the reputation," said Lorenz.

According to data from Dubuque Police Chief Mark Dalsing, officers responded to the following number of disturbances each year at Players Club.

2009: 23 disturbances

2010: 40 disturbances

2011: 43 disturbances

2012: 20 disturbances

2013: 23 disturbances

"What the disturbance call could be, it might have started out with the officer just hanging outside of the bar and they saw it," Dalsing said. "It might have been a patron inside calling. It might have been some of the staff inside calling."

This week, Lorenz changed the name of Players Club, located on Central Avenue in Dubuque, to Mad Hatter.

"I just think it's time for change. I'm calling it my 13 year itch," said Lorenz.

The new name has also prompted a new type of atmosphere inside the bar. Lorenz said the bar will feature country music, pop music, karaoke, and rock and roll. He said the bar will also have a dress code.

"We are not going to allow any baggy paints, sunglasses worn at night, and clean clothes. You know sometimes people like to come after work and they are in their work clothes. We really want to make this a great place and happy place to be, but we are going to have to enforce the dress code a little bit," said Lorenz.

Lt. Scott Baxter with the Dubuque Police Department said changing the bar's environment could decrease those numbers even more, but, he adds, the department will continue to have a police presence outside the bar at the end of the night.

Lt. Baxter said the department puts officers in several busy bar areas in Dubuque, not just at the Mad Hatter location.

Dubuque Police said Players Club itself, as a business, has had no criminal violations or charges since at least 2010.
