Uber ride service looking for drivers in Cedar Rapids, Iowa City

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - There may soon be a new way to get around in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City.

Uber, a company that connects riders and drivers, is looking to hire drivers in eastern Iowa.

The service, which competes with taxi services in large cities around the world, is all done through an app on your smartphone. You use your phone to request a ride and say where you are and where you want to go.

Even after you get in the car, you continue to use your phone. The app stores your credit card information and that's how you pay -- no money changes hands.

According to job postings, drivers must at least 23, have their own four-door vehicle, license, insurance and vehicle registration. Drivers also have to have a good driving record and must pass a background check.

The company claims this private form of transportation tends to cost less than a cab, and some people KWWL talked to are interested in the service.

"Well it would save on gas money for one -- that'd be nice," said David Sheppard, who lives in Cedar Rapids. "Or you could even make money driving people to work."

"I think it could have a useful purpose, especially in a city like Cedar Rapids where you really need a car to get around," said Abhay Nadipuram, who lives in Cedar Rapids.

Others told us off-camera that it's not a service they'd use here -- including people who have used it in other cities.

In Cedar Rapids, all taxicab and limousine companies must get licenses. Even airport shuttles fall under that city code, and the City Clerk's office says that Uber would, too.

But while the company is looking to hire drivers in Cedar Rapids, it has not applied for a license from the city.

Iowa City is currently working on making changes to its cab ordinance following recent sexual assaults allegedly involving cab drivers.

In Des Moines there's also a cab ordinance. Uber just launched there and did not get city cab taxi licenses for drivers.

KWWL checked Career Builder to see if Uber is looking for drivers in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area or in Dubuque, but did not see any job postings for those cities.
