UNI students stand against violence

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

The video of Ray Rice punching his then girlfriend is still circulating days after it was released.

Students at the University of Northern Iowa spent the weekend speaking out against his actions and violence in general.

Sigma Phi Epsilon President Matt Rietz says Rice's actions are reprehensible.

"Its very unfortunate as a man to have someone in the spotlight like that that has done something like that and to give women the idea that all men are like that. But then you go through a program like this and you understand that's a very small percent of the population. So it takes men like us to stand up against people like him."

Students learned how to properly address situations of all kinds of harassment and how to not be a bystander to such events.

The students say they'll take what they learned this weekend and spread the message to others

"I want to be comfortable talking about it to other people, and I want to be  active in the community with preventing instances like this and be a role model to my fraternity brothers as well."
