Six weeks ago, Waverly-Shell Rock and West Delaware battled for a berth in the state baseball tournament.
Tonight on the gridiron, fifth-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock hosts fourth-ranked West Delaware in a showdown in 3A District 3.
The Go-Hawks played and beat two 4-A teams in non-district play.
On West Delaware's first play from scrimmage, the Hawks' Brent Lammers fires and is picked off by Go-Hawks Ryan Sprain. Waverly-Shell Rock gets a field goal out of the turnover -- Go-Hawks lead 3-0.
The next time Waverly-Shell Rock got the ball, Riley Steckleberg scores on a short run. The Go-Hawks lead 9-0.
But things turned for Go-Hawk head coach Mark Hubbard's squad -- on the first play of the second quarter. West Delaware's Coy Russell takes a handoff, breaks a couple of tackles and sprints 35 yards to pull the Hawks within 9-7.
Later in the second quarter, West Delaware quarterback Brent Lammers with all kinds of time fires a 20-yard touchdown pass to Trent Curley -- the Hawks grab a 14-9 lead.
Waverly-Shell Rock comes back. Jake Velky goes up top to Alex Robson, who does a little shake and fake for 35 yards into the red zone.
But on fourth and goal from the half-yard line, the West Delaware defense stopped the Go-Hawks cold.
And then West Delaware goes 99-and-a-half yards -- Brent Lammers goes deep -- and the Hawks' John Nagel outleaps two Go-Hawk defenders on a pretty 63-yard touchdown play.
West Delaware leads 21-12 at halftime, and West Delaware wins the big showdown, 29-18.
