It was a big, early season match-up in Class 3-A as second-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier played host to third-ranked Solon.
Xavier took an early 7-0 lead on an interception return -- and then Mother Nature decided to add rain to the cold. Despite the rain, Solon kept up a drive they hoped would lead to a score.
Spartan quarterback Brandon Childs made a nice completion to Jacob Coons for a big gain, but a couple of plays later, Childs tries to hit Coons for the score, but the Xavier defense comes up with the big stick, putting the ball on the turf. The Spartans would turn the ball over on downs a few plays later
Xavier takes advantage. Jay Kortemeyer rumbles 38 yards, setting up a 25-yard, quarterback-keeper touchdown run by Bryce Schulte putting Xavier up 14-0.
On Xavier's next drive, Schulte pitches to Blake Whitten, who then throws the 32-yard pass to Matt Downey, who gets the ball to the four-yard line.
That sets up Kortemeyer for the easy six -- and with the point after, Saints go up 21-0.
Solon gets one last shot before half. Childs hits Halston Durr with the 34-yard pass, but the Xavier "D" comes up big a couple plays later with the big 4th-and-1 stop as Childs gets stuffed on the quarterback keeper by Thomas Ickes.
Saints take the 21-0 lead into half. They go on to win 28-0.
