DUBUQUE COUNTY (KWWL) -

A Holy Cross man has been charged with vehicular homicide as a result of drunk driving in an Aug. 2 crash that killed four Western Dubuque boys riding on a gator.

Joseph Michael Connolly, 24, of Holy Cross was arrested Friday afternoon and charged with four counts of vehicular homicide by operating while intoxicated, one count of serious injury by OWI, four counts of vehicular homicide by reckless driving, one count of serious injury by reckless driving and failure to stop for a stop sign, according to the Dubuque County Sheriff's Office.

All of the charges except for failure to stop for a stop sign are felonies.

All charges stem from an Aug. 2 crash at the intersection of East Pleasant Grove and Hartbecke roads.

Connolly's vehicle was southbound on Hartbecke Road and failed to stop at the stop sign, according to the sheriff's office. His truck then struck an eastbound gator ridden by Bryce Wilwert, Mitchell Kluesner, Nicholas Kramer and Sean Kenneally.

All four boys died as a result of the crash. A passenger in Connolly's vehicle was also injured.

Court documents say officers found an open container of vodka and an empty beer can in Connolly's vehicle, along with a cooler of beer in the back.

Connolly also failed two of three preliminary breath tests, according to those documents.

Connolly is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond in the Dubuque Law Enforcement Center. He is being held pending his court appearance, according to the sheriff's office.
