DECORAH (KWWL) -

The Decorah Police Chief has issued a safety alert after police were notified of criminal activity that took place at a rental house near Luther College.

According to the police chief, a similar "burglary or theft of property" happened at a different rental near campus at the end of August.

He said in both incidents, residents were not home and electronic equipment was stolen.

Anyone with information about either crime is asked to contact the Decorah Police Department at (563) 383-3667.

The police chief is urging all residents to exercise safety measures by doing the following:

-Always lock your doors, especially when you are away or asleep.

-Do not leave exterior doors open.

-Report suspicious activity, criminal incidents.

-Record serial numbers of electronics and other valuable items.

-Do not leave valuables unattended and in plain view in vehicles and elsewhere.

-Consider backing up computer files from your computer onto a flash drive or external hard drive in the event your computer is lost/stolen or becomes inoperable.

-Consider installing blocks in the tracks of ground floor windows to limit access space.

"We cannot eliminate all risks, by working together we can continue to keep our community a safe place," said the police chief in his safety alert.
