Storms flood some Iowa roads

Posted: Updated:

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Heavy rainfall has caused flooding and power outages in parts of Nebraska and Iowa, with winds bringing down tree limbs and storm water stranding motorists.

Omaha firefighters say a woman and three children had to be rescued from a minivan that became trapped under an overpass on Tuesday. In some places, manhole covers popped off because the runoff overwhelmed storm sewers.

More than 2,100 Omaha Public Power District customers were without electricity for a time on Tuesday night. For about half an hour, the Douglas County 911 system didn't work properly.

Water covered roadways in both states, including Iowa Highway 92 near Beacon.

County emergency management coordinator Jo Anne Duckworth says up to 4 inches of rain fell in 45 minutes in the southern side of Iowa's Union County.
