UPDATE: Volunteers in Waterloo reach 78 former students

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) - Over the weekend, dozens of volunteers went door-to-door trying to make contact with more than 100 students who have stopped going to class.

It was part of the "Reconnect to Graduate" program, where volunteers let former students know they want them back in school.

According to Waterloo Public School District spokesperson Tara Thomas, volunteers visited a total of 119 homes and made face-to-face contact with 78 students.

Thomas said the coming weeks will be spent with staff from the school district making every effort to get all of the students, including the students they didn't touch base with over the weekend, re-enrolled in school.

This weekend marked the third year for the volunteer program.

The district reports more than 70 students have come back to school as a result of the "Reconnect to Graduate" program.
