CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

Thanks to volunteers, one Cedar Rapids organization is saving big bucks.

The Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Department just completed its annual volunteer report.

Last year people offered up a lot of their free-time to the the department, totaling more than 27,800 hours.

That's equal to more than 13 full-time employees.

Using volunteers instead of paid staff saved the department more than $582,000.

There are several volunteer opportunities. Currently the department is looking for people to help with "Night at Ushers Scary." It's a Halloween event that will be held on October 24 and 25.
