Local workers to speak at forum, layout proposals for change

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

The Center for Worker Justice of Eastern Iowa developed a new set of proposals for local employment standards.

Iowa City workers will share their experiences and lay out those new proposals Thursday at the Iowa City Public Library.

The proposals come after after a series of surveys and discussions of common experiences to identify growing trends and specific changes that would most improve the lives of local workers and families.

They'll will talk about the the crisis-level challenges they face while confronting poverty wages, temporary work, wage theft, unpredictable schedules and discrimination in local workplaces.

There will be a panel of representatives from the U.S. Department of labor, the Iowa State Legislature, along with other local community members commenting and analyzing.

The forum will conclude with opportunities for community members to support CWJ members' proposals for improved local employment standards.

The event will be held Thursday, September 11, 2014 and is free and open to the public, at the Iowa City Public Library, Meeting Room A., starting at 6 p.m.
