WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The National Weather Service will present Steve Gottschalk, from Lowden, with their highest award given to volunteer weather observers, the Thomas Jefferson Award.

Gottschalk has been a volunteer for the Weather Service for more than 30 years, providing them, local media and his community with observations about hazardous and severe weather conditions.

The National Weather Service will present Gottschalk with the award on September 10 in Lowden.

The Thomas Jefferson Award is named for our 3rd president, who made a nearly unbroken series of weather observations from 1776 until 1816; the award is given to no more than 5 weather observers yearly.

To qualify for the Thomas Jefferson Award, a volunteer must already be a recipient of the Holm award and must still be performing duties in a superior manner.
