Iowa City to host taxicab forum

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) -

Iowa City staff will host a forum to discuss proposed changes to the city's taxicab ordinance.

In response to several sexual assault complaints over the last few months, Iowa City Police Chief wants taxi companies to follow tougher regulations.

An open forum will be Tuesday, September 9, from 4 to 6 p.m., in Emma J. Harvat Hall, 410 E. Washington Street, Iowa City.

The purpose of the forum are for city staff to hear and consider concerns from the public regarding the proposed changes as well as solicit alternate ideas.

Current staff recommendations are:

- Taxicab companies should be required to own vehicles used by the business.

- Require taxicab companies to dispatch from an accessible office 24 hours a day.

- Require City issued IDs for taxicab drivers that include photos.

- Require a signature receipt for an informational packet regarding Iowa City taxi ordinances before taxicab drivers are able to be licensed by the City.

- Require unique color schemes for each taxicab company.

Emails and letters from those who are unable to attend can be sent to Captain Douglas S. Hart at doug-hart@iowa-city.org or Iowa City Police Department, ATTN: Capt. Douglas Hart, 410 E. Washington Street, Iowa City, IA 52240.
