Dragonboat races continue Sunday in Dubuque

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

Despite high river levels, the Dragonboat races will continue Sunday at Miller Riverview Park and Campground in Dubuque.

Hundreds of people made their way to the campground Saturday to catch a glimpse of the races.

A dragonboat is a human powered water craft where teams tirelessly paddle to get the best time. This is the 27 year for the races in Dubuque County. This year, 44 teams, including a team from Germany, competed on the mighty Mississippi.

Sue Miller is the President of the Dubuque Dragonboat Association. She said this year, the Mississippi River levels were high, which made it harder to race.

"This year the river is higher than it's ever been for racing and it's making it interesting for our sterns that are out there staring the boat, but they are doing OK," Miller said.

While racing continues Sunday, Miller said safety is still the top priority.
