ISU upset bid of #20 Kansas State falls short

Posted: Updated:

Iowa State erased an early 13 point deficit, but didn't have enough in the end as the Cyclones fell 28-26 to #20 Kansas State. Wildcat quarterback Jake Waters scored the game winning touchdown with 1:30 remaining in the game.

In the early going, this looked like another blowout in the making. Charles Jones put Kansas State up 7-0 with a short touchdown run just 2 minutes in to the game. The Wildcats hit field goals on their next 2 drives to take a 13-0 lead.

That's when the Cyclones woke up with 28 unanswered points. Sam Richardson hit Jarvis West on a 17 yard scoring strike late in the first quarter. Then, following a big defensive stop, West returned a punt 82 yards for Iowa State's first lead of the game, 14-13. Minutes later, Devondrick Nealy would find the end zone from 4 yards out, but it was West that would provide the play of the game. On a reverse pass, West heaved up a ball finding freshman Allen Lazard in the back of the end zone as Iowa State would lead 28-13.

Kansas State, however, marched down the field before halftime, as Waters finished it with a one yard touchdown run to pull the Wildcats within 8.

After a scoreless 3rd quarter, Johnson would again find the end zone in the 4th, but on the 2-point conversion attempt, Waters was stuffed by ISU's Kamari Cotton-Moya. That became a moot point when the Wildcat quarterback scored the game winner in the final minutes.
