He's not the biggest guy on the field -- but Waverly-Shell Rock junior Ryan Sprain makes up for it with intensity.

Go-Hawk head coach Mark Hubbard said, :"He's like dynamite. Comes in small packages and packs a punch."

And that was especially true in his first real varsity action. Last Friday against Waterloo West -- Sprain tallied a team high 12 tackles -- and scored two touchdowns -- which included a 65 yard free kick return.

Sprain said, "First I just focused on catching the ball, which is kind of hard. Then I just saw the hole, and it was huge. Then I saw one guy in front of me. Needed to choose which way to go, and I went left. It worked out."

Sprain isn't the only newcomer making an impact for this team -- in fact the Go-Hawks have about 8 new starters on each side of the ball -- and coach Mark Hubbard was pleased by what he saw in their season opening win --

"We've got a group of kids that I think thrives on challenges. We saw that Friday night."

And even with less experience -- Hubbard believes this team can be one of the best to come through Waverly-Shell Rock -- partly because of players like Sprain.

"He's so coachable, and that's what makes it fun. When a kid like him comes to practice everyday, and he looks you right in the eye when you're coaching him, he wants to get better. He accepts responsibility for when he does make mistakes. That's great to have. Then that's going to rub off on other players."

And while Hubbard says he's not surprised by the junior's week one performance -- Ryan Sprain didn't really expect it.

"Oh no, not at all. I was nervous coming in, but afterward I was really surprised."

Waverly-Shell Rock hosts Mason City on Friday night.
