Coralville apartments catch fire, second time in less than a week

CORALVILLE (KWWL) - You can see the smoke damage at the Coralville apartment building located at 725 20th Ave. Hours later, the smell lingers in the air.

"We did find fire in the walls and ceilings in a couple of the apartments adjoining each other so we spent the rest of the morning taking that out and extinguishing those hot spots inside those areas," said Orey Schwitzer, Assistant Fire Chief.

They worked to make sure the fire doesn't start up again. The same building just caught fire on Friday. During that fire, a family had to be rescued from a third floor unit and 2 people were taken to the hospital with smoke inhalation.

The building has been empty since that fire, but work to fix the units may have caused the second one.

"I don't think this was a re-kindle," said Schwitzer. "I really believe it had something to do with the repair, the remodeling that was going on."

Firefighters still aren't sure what caused the first fire last week.

"I'm not labeling it as suspicious but we still haven't pinpointed the actual cause of that fire yet," said Schwitzer.

They say it's pretty rare for them to have put out fires at the same building, especially just days apart.

The people who live there will have to wait a week or two to move back in.
