City Engineer: 4th Street bridge closed in Waterloo for 8 weeks

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

A detour has hit a bridge that sees plenty of traffic, and Waterloo's City Engineer expects it to be closed for eight weeks.

A lot of people think it's an inconvenience, but city officials said it has to be done.

Eric Thorson, the city engineer, said construction crews will spend weeks grinding off the bumps in the surface. He said the next step will be "sounding," which is a process that detects weak spots in the bridge, and then crews will resurface the road.

According to Thorson, the 4th Street bridge hasn't been closed for maintenance reasons in about 40 years.

He said the bridge isn't wide enough to keep one lane open, so city officials had to close the whole thing. However, the covered pedestrian area will remain open.

Thorson said eight weeks is just the estimated time frame for the $250,000 construction project, but if the weather cooperates he anticipates crews will finish sooner.
