DeWitt boy to be Hawkeyes Kid Captain for Ball State game

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) - An eight-year-old boy from DeWitt with a brain tumor will be the Hawkeyes Kid Captain for the game against Ball State on Saturday.

Joseph Burken, the son of Julie and Wade Burken, was on vacation with his family in Chicago when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Joseph, who was just 5 years old at the time, spent 10 days in a Chicago hospital before being transferred to the University of Iowa Children's Hospital.

Joseph advocates for other pediatric cancer patients and raises awareness of the need for pediatric cancer research.

When he was six, Joseph learned one of his father's co-workers had a grandson diagnosed with cancer, so Joseph wrote him a book called “I Had Cancer Too by Joseph Burken Age 6.”

For more information and a video about Joseph, visit www.uichildrens.org/2014-joseph.

Kick-off for Saturday's game is set for 2:35 p.m. at Kinnick Stadium.
