Lone surviving 'Ironman' to appear at Kinnick on Saturday

Posted: Updated:

The lone surviving member of the 1939 Iowa Hawkeyes "Ironmen" team will be honored at Saturday's game against Ball State.

Hank Vollenweider, the only surviving member of the team, is expected to join more than 150 other former players as the University of Iowa celebrates 125 years of college football and the 75th anniversary of the historic squad.

That 1939 team, which included Nile Kinnick, saw about 50 players who attended spring practice not return in the fall. The team finished second in the Big Ten with a 6-1-1 overall record, 4-1-1 in conference play, and was ranked ninth in the final Associated Press Poll of the season.

Saturday will be the third-ever meeting between the Hawkeyes and Ball State.

Iowa has beaten the Cardinals by a combined score of 101-0 in the two previous meetings, which were both at Kinnick Stadium. Iowa won on September 3, 2005, by a score of 56-0, and then on September 25, 2010, by a score of 45-0.

Ball State comes into Kinnick with a 1-0 record after beating Colgate on Saturday by a score of 30-10.

Kick-off at Kinnick Stadium is scheduled for 2:35 p.m.
