UPDATE: Bomb squad detonates device at Waterloo park

UPDATE: Waterloo Police confirm to KWWL that an improvised explosive device was detonated Saturday.

Police were called to the Riverview Recreation area, also known as the Mitchell Sand Pits around 2 p.m. Officers were dispatched on a report of a suspicious item. After several hours on the scene, the bomb squad successfully destroyed it without any injuries. Details about the device are still unclear.

Nearby homes were not evacuated.

Police say there is not currently a suspect, but the incident is still under investigation.

ORIGINAL STORY: Waterloo Police spent hours Saturday on a report of a suspicious device at a recreational area.

They were called around 2 p.m. to the area known as the Mitchell Sand Pits.

It's an area at the end of Mitchell Avenue near the Riverview Recreation Area.

Our crew at the scene saw a police officer in a bomb-proof suit with much of the area cordoned off.

No homes were evacuated.

Police have not released any information.
