Cyclones fall hard in opener against North Dakota State

AMES (KWWL) -

Iowa State squandered a quick start as North Dakota State rallied with 34 unanswered points to storm out of Ames with a 34-14 season opening win.

The win was the 25th straight for the Bison, tying an all-time FCS division record.

The Cyclones were the early aggressors. Aaron Wimberly opened up the scoring with a 16 yard touchdown run. Wimberly picked up a 3 yard touchdown in the second quarter, set up by Allen Lazard's first career catch, a 47 yard reception, which would put Iowa State up 14-0 in the second quarter.

That's when the wheels fell off. On North Dakota State's next drive John Crockett broke free on an 80 yard touchdown run, and everything went south for the Cyclones from there. Crockett finished the game with 3 scores and 138 rushing yards.

The Iowa State offense, meanwhile, managed very little after their 2 scoring drives. Sam Richardson threw for 151 yards and 2 interceptions. In total, the Cyclones only put up 253 total yards to North Dakota State's 503.

The Iowa State season opening loss was the second straight to an FCS opponent. UNI knocked off the Cyclones in week one last season.
