IOWA CITY (KWWL) - The Iowa Hawkeyes were able to clinch a first game win beating the Northern Iowa Panthers 31-23 in Saturdays game.

Iowa got off to an early start with a touchdown within minutes of the game beginning.

The Panthers had to settle with a field goal after a tough penalty denied their would-be touchdown.

However, shortly after their forced field goal the Panthers then drove down the field to score a touchdown of their own to end the first quarter with a lead over the Hawks at 10-7.

The Hawks then kicked it in high gear and responded to the Panthers touchdown with one of their own and took the lead again 14-10.

Having trouble capitalizing on a great pass, the Panthers were forced to kick another field goal to come close to tying the Hawks at 14-13.

Right before halftime, the Hawks padded their lead to 17-14 with a field goal to end the first half of the game.

Shortly into the second half, Hawks Junior receiver Tevaun Smith caught a one handed pass to score a touchdown giving the Hawks a bigger lead at 24-13.

The Panthers pushed back with a pass to David Johnson and he ran over 60 yards for the touchdown.

On the next possession the Hawks fumbled and the Panthers recovered.

The Panthers couldn't make anything happen with the fumble recovery after the Hawks picked off a pass by UNI's quarterback Sawyer Kollmorgen.

Late in the third quarter UNI continued to struggle with penalties and were forced to kick a field goal to come within 1 of the Hawks.

The Hawks scored a decisive touchdown on a pass that cushioned their lead over the Panthers 31-23 with 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter.

The Iowa Hawkeyes held onto their lead and defeated the Northern Iowa Panthers in the season opener at Kinnick Stadium.
