Former Montezuma school employee charged with sexual abuse

A 28 year old man, Derek John Bates, was arrested today by the Poweshiek County Sheriff's office for two counts of sexual abuse in the 3rd degree.

Bates was also arrested for one count of pattern, practice or scheme to engage in sexual exploitation by a school employee.

The Sheriff's office has been conducting an ongoing investigation along with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Iowa Attorney General's office to charge Bates.                                                                                         

The Sheriff's office received a report on June 14, 2014 that Derek Bates had committed at least one sex act with two separate minors.

Further investigations led officials to interview the minors and discovered from approximately March 2012-July 2012 that Bates had sexual contact with both minors.

Bates was working at the Montezuma Community School district at the time of the incident in addition to the minors both attending within the school district.

Sexual abuse in the 3rd degree in a felony and has a maximum sentence of 10 years, whereas pattern, practice or scheme to engage in sexual exploitation by a school employee has a 5 year prison sentence.
