American Red Cross offers safety tips for Labor Day weekend

Posted: Updated:
WATERLOO (KWWL) - This Labor Day weekend, many people will be on road trips, out on the water, or grilling out.

To keep people safe, the American Red Cross is offering safety tips for the holiday weekend.

For safe travel, the Red Cross suggests bringing extra supplies like food, water, a flashlight and a first aid kit. Make sure someone is informed about your destination, route and expected arrival time; always obey the rules of the road.

To keep safe while swimming, they say keep an eye on weather conditions throughout the day. Remember to swim in a supervised area and obey warnings.

Keep an eye on kids in and near the water. For young and inexperienced swimmers, keep them at an arm's length and make sure they're wearing a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.

The Red Cross says that to safely grill out, always follow the manufacturer's grill instructions, keep kids and pets away from a lit grill, and don't add fuel starter after coals are ignited. They also say to be sure to use long-handled utensils and don't leave a lit grill unattended.

The Red Cross has First Aid and Swim apps which you can download for free; you can get more information about those apps here: http://redcross.org/apps
