More than 800 drivers cited, warned during 3-day traffic patrols

IOWA CITY (AP) -

A coalition of law enforcement agencies says more than 800 drivers were cited or warned during a three-day enforcement crackdown near the eastern Iowa border.

The Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau says it partnered with 12 state and local agencies to increase patrols on Highway 61 from Dubuque to Keokuk, a 200-mile stretch where data has shown a high rate of impaired drivers and fatal crashes.

The agency says 802 citations and warnings were issued between Aug. 15 and Aug. 17. The arrests included 11 for possession of narcotics and nine for operating while intoxicated.

The project was part of a national campaign called "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over," which runs to Sept. 7.
