New football coach looking to turn around Waterloo East

WATERLOO (KWWL) - A visit to Waterloo East's Football practice Tuesday found new Trojan head coach Richard Carter was putting his young team through a tough session.

Coach Carter has been a part of the East Football program for several years as the offensive coordinator and Carter was an assistant two years ago when the Trojans won their first playoff game in 20 years.

Because of an injury at quarterback to senior starter John Magnuson, Chase Pryor will be making his first career start on Friday night at Marshalltown.

"You know Chase is looking really good -- he had his first scrimmage, he was obviously very nervous for his first scrimmage, but he did really well," Coach Richard Carter said. "He made some good plays, led the team and I was really proud of him. John has been great for us being a leader and the coach on the field when I'm not there for them. We weren't trying to tell too many people about John, but I guess the cat's out of the bag now."

Preseason all-state receiver Darren Scott believes the Trojans can make some noise.

"I'm very excited," Scott said. "I know we have been working hard all year and all summer, and I'm hoping that can all come together and make our team a good team a playoff team and bring back that East High pride."

East is looking to bounce back from an 0-9 season in 2013.
