BLACK HAWK COUNTY (KWWL) -

During the Black Hawk County Fair last month, 4-H clubs across were challenged to bring canned food items for donation to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.

Ten clubs collected more than 536 pounds of food, which organizers say is the equivalent of 447 meals.

Club results, submitted by the Black Hawk County Extension and Outreach, are as follows:

- Lincoln Clover Links: 138 lbs.

- Lester Livewires: 74 lbs.

- Orange Clovers: 70 lbs.

- Bright Eagles: 12 lbs.

- Bennington Boosters: 76 lbs.

- CF Lucky Hawks: 42 lbs.

- Home School Heroes: 26 lbs.

- Lincoln Links: 20 lbs.

- CF Rising Stars: 22 lbs.

- Mt. Vernon Pals: 56 lbs.

Individual club members were also encouraged to raise chickens and bring them to the fair.

In early June, 4-H members picked up baby chicks at the Extension office, fed and cared for chickens and brought them to the fair.

The broiler chick project netted 112 chickens, weighing 588 pounds of fresh meat delivered to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank which is uncommon for food bank patrons.

"This project is one way that 4-Hers learn the value of service to the community, one of the cornerstones of 4-H," Mike Pipho, extension council member and project organizer, said in a statement. "We hope to grow this project next year to include more youth across the county."
