Kollmorgen named starter as UNI gets set for Iowa

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -  Mark Farley decided on a starting quarterback for Saturday's game against Iowa, and that will be Sawyer Kollmorgen --

Kollmorgen, a junior, won the starting job over senior Brion Carnes. He'll be entering his third season as the Panthers regular starting quarterback.

Carnes, however, is expected to get time under center as well. Coach Mark Farley says he will play this weekend against the Hawkeyes, but specifically when that happens is up in the air.

It's more who's got the hot hand, who's making plays, that type of stuff,” says Farley, “We've got to put a guy on the field for the first play of the game, and it will be Sawyer.”

I know that I need to do my job as a quarterback, and take care of the ball,” says Kollmorgen, “I have a lot of weapons around me, so all I know is that as long as I take care of the ball, do my job, distribute the ball well to those guys, then I'll be fine.”

For UNI, Saturday presents an opportunity to snap a 15 game losing streak against the Hawks.

To do that, they'll have to slow down Iowa's running game, which is something they couldn't do two years ago. That's when relatively unknown Mark Weisman, buried at number four on iowa's depth chart, made the most of his opportunities plowing through the Panthers' defense.

Weisman ran for over a hundred yards and scored 3 touchdowns in that game. Coach Farley believes slowing that down starts up front.

We have to find that edge to slow those plays down, get them off balance, says Farley, “If we can, we need to make the best of any opportunities that are presented to us.”

You know you're going to take some abuse, that's normal, but I enjoy going against the run game,” says senior defensive tackle Xavier Williams, “I feel like that's one of our strengths as a whole D-Line all together. So I think we'll match up well against Iowa.”
