Cedar Rapids high school gets new cafeteria

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A Cedar Rapids high school cafe is ready to serve its first meal.

The new Washington High School cafeteria, now known as the Warrior Cafe will open to students and staff on Wednesday, Aug. 27, following a special ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 a.m.

The cafeteria project was finished over the summer and included new kitchen equipment and the installation of new cooking stations and serving lines.

Building workers also remodeled the dining area with updated finishes, and new energy-efficient upgrades.

Washington High School opened at this location in 1957. The cafeteria layout, serving lines, utility capacity, and much of the equipment had never before been updated.

“Everyone who steps into the newly remodeled Washington cafeteria is amazed at the total transformation,” said Dr. Ralph Plagman, Principal. “It's an up-to-date and inviting setting for Washington students to eat breakfast and lunch.”

The renovation was funded through the School Infrastructure Local Option Tax (SILO) and Food and Nutrition funds.

The renovated cafeteria now resembles a college food service site. The design also provides the flexibility to adapt to enrollment and program changes in the future.

They will have an open house with tours of the new cafeteria in October.
