CHARLES CITY (KWWL) -

A Charles City boy who helped his friend that was struck by lightning is being called a hero.

4th grade student Jared Cook was honored by the State Patrol at a surprise assembly at his Washington Elementary Friday. In August of 2012, Jared was fishing in Lime Springs when lightning struck another boy. Jared was the first person to respond, and got help for the boy. Though he was legally dead for over 20 minutes, the injured boy survived.

The State Patrol gave Jared a framed letter of recognition for his heroism.
